riod of her life isthe well known one by Romney, now the property of the Eng-lish nation. In the present canvas the Countess appears in the full bloomof a youthful maturity, posed at three-quarter length against abackground of brownish depths on the one hand and an airyturquoise sky on the other. Her presence fills the picture inmore than the usual sense, portrayed as she is in natural andadorned splendor, with a wealth of magnificent red hair piledhigh over her head and curling down in front of one shoulder,and wearing coils of golden-amber beads, and a mantle of crim-son velvet over her gauzy gown of white. The mantle appearsonly at her left, and her white gown, whose loose flowing sleeveis bound by an armlet, shows in a broad expanse of light foldsover her right shoulder and exposes generously her neck andbreast. With figure slightly to the right, her face is turnedtoward the left, where her glance is directed, the face beingseen nearly full, with red cheeks and an incipient smile.

Xo. 41GILBERT CHARLES STUART American: 1756—1828 PORTRAIT OF JOHN WILLET HOOD Height, 42 inches; width, 24% inches John Willet Hood, Rear Admiral of the Red, Alee Admiral ofthe Coasts of Devonshire and Cornwall, Lord Warden of theStannaries. The admiral is portrayed in rich dark blue coat with broadrevers and buttons of dull gold, its scarlet lined collar turnedoutward and bent down upon the shoulder. He wears a whitestock and gracefully arranged jabot, and a small gray-whitewig. He faces the left, nearly three-quarters to the front, withfixed, steady gaze straight ahead. His eyes are blue and hischeeks rosy, and the flesh tones throughout are in the crisp,fresh rendering characteristic of the painter. With the lightconcentrated on the head and dimming as it falls upon thefigure, the subject is seen against a neutral background of olivetones shading into brown.
