Stevenson^ was of Irish descent and anative of North Carolina, but removed to Kentucky inearly life, and there engaged in farming, in which businesshe remained until young Adlai was about fifteen years ofage, when he removed to Bloomington, 111. His mother^smaiden name was Ewing, from which comes Adlai^s secondname. She was of Scotch origin, and thus we have unitedin the person of Mr. Stevenson the pluck, indomitablewill and ability of the Irish, and the integrity, perseveranceand shrewdness of the Scotch. He is a cousin of JamesL. Ewing, his law partner, and also of that distinguishedKentuckian, James A. McKenzie. Shortly after the removal of the family to Bloomington,111., the father died.
