One portion of this decoration— Baptistethe admirable reliefs of the twelve months with the signs of the Lemoyne:Zodiac, by which the lower tier of boxes round the pit are panelled— jacquesreminds us that to Pajou fell the task of supplying the three figures Caffierineeded to complete Goujons fountain when it was transferred, in ^nd1789, from its original position to the centre of the Place du pajou.Marche des Innocents.1 If he were unable to endow the threenymphs which he added to the monument with the naif freshnessof the earlier work, Pajou, at least, succeeded in reaching some-thing of that exquisite discretion in the treatment of relief bywhich the elder sculptors work was always distinguished ; for thestudies into which he had been drawn by his decorations
