In 1866, while on a visit to the United States, he gave to Harvard College $150,000for the establishment of a Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, and at thesame time gave $150,000 to found the Peabody Museum of Natural History, at Yale.He also, at this time, established a Southern Educational Fund of $2,100,000. In1869, besides increasing his gifts to the Peabody Institute of Baltimore, as alreadymentioned, he endowed the Peabody Academy of Sciences at Salem, Massachusetts,with $140,000; gave $60,000 to Washington College, in Virginia ; $50,000 to a Pea-body Institute at North Danvers, Massachusetts; $30,000 to Phillips Academy, at An-dover, Massachusetts. He also gave $25,000 to Kenyon College, Ohio, and $20,000to the Maryland Historical Society, and the same amount for a public library in George-town, Massachusetts. These various gifts, with others less known to the public, amount, in all, to over fourmillions of dollars—a noble benefaction for the increase of knowledge.
