Nothing has altered his compatriotsbelief that the eras of German literature whichdeserve to be recorded as epochs are still denoted bySchiller, Goethe, Grillparzer, Hebbel and Haupt-mann. We live in a material age, when literarysuccesses are appraised in terms of vogue. Measuredby that standard, Hauptmann stands high amongthe best sellers of all countries. The SimkenBell has reached its eightieth German edition—German editions sometimes run to 2,000 or 3,000copies ; of translations in English, French, Russianand Italian no figures are available.
