eightof the spleen is greater than that of any other organ, the spleenin old age weighing less than half as much as in maturity. Thepancreas atrophies, there is proliferation with hardening of theconnective tissue compressing the vesicles and lobules, the canalof _Wirsung becomes hard and its caliber diminished. Occasion-ally the organ undergoes fatty degeneration without diminutionin size. Its texture which is in maturity rather soft becomesharder, of the consistency of softened wax. The kidneys un-dergo atrophic, sclerotic and other degenerative changes whichare so like the pathological: changes found in interstitial nephritisthat it is often impossible to distinguish between them at post-mortem examinations. The recent discovery of a progressiveincrease of connective-tissue fibers between the apex of thepyramids—the increase continuing from birth to death inold age—is as far as known the only histological manifestationof ageing which does not appear as a pathological condition.
