Haliday appears to have gummed his insects in batches on sheets of card using a water-soluble gum . The insects were placed in various postures quite close together. Subsequently, the cards were cut, each insect then being left isolated on its own ,piece of card. The various shapes of these cards (oblongs triangles, regular and irregular polygons) are determined by the original juxtapositions and spacings and not as some curators have thought by a coding system so that shape indicated provenance. The irregular shape of many of the cards on which Haliday’s own specimens are mounted is however often a useful indication, because some other collectors’ material is consistently mounted on rectangular cards (e.g. Walker, Cutis, whose specimens frequently occur in Haliday’s collection). Another feature of Haliday’s method is that the pin bearing the card often pierces the card to one or other side, whereas with ‘Walker’s the pin invariably passes through the middle of the lower margin. The pins often have separate quite large heads although a wide variety of pins was employed. The card was frequently placed low down on the pin. In many instances, the heads of the pins are coloured: green to indicate Irish provenance, red English, and white Scottish.] Few specimens bear labels. Where they do, the label is transfixed by the pin and is either a plain piece of paper with either the species name or its locality written in Haliday’s hand (very infrequently both) or on coloured paper employing the colour code described for the pins. There are some labels which bear numbers either transfixed by the pins or near the specimens. In addition to the carded material there are pointed and direct-pinned specimens and some dissections ordered and glued to card
