In Serbia, mostly in the villages, embroidery was a mandatory women's job. The girls learned how to tie from an early age. Although many items were decorated with embroidery, including men's clothing, embroidery still dominated women's and girl's clothes the most. In addition to being an ornament, embroidery was an indicator of social status, material status, age, regional and national affiliation.
The embroidery differed from area to area, so that in some parts of Serbia it was richer and more diverse and thus more famous. The base for the embroidery was hemp linen, and less often cotton cloth from which the shirts were sewn. The ornamentation was geometric.
Acquiring knowledge and skills of making embroideries at the end of the 19th century became part of the primary education of female children, later secondary, high school and vocational education, and after the Second World War, handicrafts and knowledge of embroidery were reduced to the subject of household.
In our folk songs, the beauties of embroidery, devices and materials for embroidery, jerdjev, needle, ibrišim, gold are mentioned, as well as respect for good embroidery and the feelings it brings to its work. There is a very interesting legend that near Vezičevo in the vicinity of Požarevac there was the endowment of Milja vezilje, who remained a girl for a whole century because she did not want to marry the one her father gave her, so she embroidered, sold embroidery and built a church with that money, the church of Vezilja, which was destroyed during the Turks occupation.
The girls embroidered and prepared their maiden clothes, that is, the dowry, which they would bring to the groom's house during the wedding.
