trade,to which Hartford owes a large share of its greatness as a manufacturing centre,has many long-established representatives, of which there is none more promi-nent than Mr. E. S. Clark. He has been engaged in this branch of business forthe past forty years, not only as a dealer and packer of seed-leaf tobacco, butas a grower, having large plantations at Poquonac and at Bloomfield in thisState. He averages forty to fifty acres in tobacco each year, and during theharvest time employs some fifty hands. His Hartford establishment is one ofthe largest as well as one of the oldest in the city, the warehouse being fourstories in height, with a frontage of twenty-five feet, including both Nos. 225and 227 State Street, and a depth of one hundred feet. A large staff of compe-tent assistants is employed here, and all orders are executed with the utmostdispatch. Mr. Clark ships to all parts of the United States, and is prepared toexecute the largest orders from any quarter at short notice. 94

It is evident that manyresidents of Hartford think that the market conducted by Mr. Bernard McGurkat No. 553 Main Street fills that bill pretty well; at all events, they surelyconsider it to be one of the best markets in town, for they buy all their meats,poultry, vegetables, etc., at Mr. McGurks, and they tell their friends to do thesame thing if they wish to save money and to make sure of getting just whatthey pay for. The premises utilized measure 15x50 feet in dimensions,
