A cast and enamelled copper alloy heraldic horse harness pendant dating from the Medieval period, c.1250-1300. A shield shaped pendant with a square top and with the sides curving round to meet in a point at the base. At the top of the shield the attachment loop is formed from a tapering projection which bends over at right angles to the pendant to form a circular loop. The shield is decorated with a design of a double-headed eagle with outstretched wings and a trifoliate tail inlaid with red enamel. Traces of blue enamel suggest that the background of the design was blue.

A very similar example of a harness pendant with the double eagle motif is recorded in DEV-412FCA, and another with differently coloured enamel in DEV-C01A37. The record SF2605 notes that:

"A double-headed eagle displayed was an armorial device used by Richard Earl of Cornwall following his election as King of the Romans in 1257. He died in 1272 and the arms was also used by his son Edmund, Earl of Cornwall 1272-1300. Richard was given the extensive Honour of Eye in Suffolk in 1230 and the Honour of Haughley by 1241. Both Honours were also held by Edmund until his death in 1300."

Harness pendants are generally dated from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with enamelled and heraldic types predominating in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (Griffiths, 1995, 62).
