The Steegoversloot (streetname "Ally over the ditch"), what a typical name! The origin is a nice story about Dordrecht from the time before the Middle Ages. In former times, Dordrecht was no more than a ribbon development of wooden houses on a dyke along a creek called the Thure. The dike was the current Voorstraat and the Thure gave the name to the ribbon development. Thuredrecht, the name that was later corrupted to Dordrecht. Thuredrecht was in a good economic position and was already growing rapidly. The ribbon development got side streets, of course, towards the landside. Houses had to make way in the ribbon development for this. In order to demolish as few houses as possible, the passageways were made as narrow as possible. A cart could just get through. This is the reason why the side streets on Voorstraat are still so curiously narrow in the connection. Incidentally, the Nieuwstraat, "Nieuwe Straat" (New Street) was the first paved side street that was made there.
