English: Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains rise in spectacular rugged folds for hundreds of miles, stretching from the Atlantic coast inland towards the border with Algeria. The western section of the ranges is home to its tallest peaks, including Mount Toubkal, which rises to 4,167 meters (13,671 feet), making it not only the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains, but also in North Africa. The Atlas Mountains form a formidable barrier, separating the coastal region that enjoys hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters from the extremely arid Sahara Desert. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the spectacular colors and impressive ridging of the High Atlas Mountains on December 30, 2023. Mount Toubkal is found in the sharpest ridges near the lower left edge (southwest section) of the image. The city of Marrakesh sits north of the mountains around Toubkal but is barely visible as tannish-gray pixels surrounded by faint green. The city of Casablanca is much more apparent as gray pixels where the Atlantic Coast meets the edge of the image.
