English: This three-dimensional image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 28 April 2021, shows Mount Tupungato in the Andes Mountains, located on the border between Argentina and Chile. The highest weather station in the Andes Mountains was recently installed near the summit of Mount Tupungato in an expedition organised by the National Geographic Society. The meteorological data collected by this station, now the highest in both the Southern and the Western Hemisphere, will allow for the study of the impacts of climate change in the region, leading scientists to better understand the dynamics of the drought that has been affecting this area for more than a decade. With an average revisit time of five days at the equator, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites provide vital data that can be used to monitor the impact of climate change and its consequences. |
