The facein the background is supposed to be that of theRev. Philip Henry, who was in his time Busbysfavourite pupil, and who always spoke enthusiastic-ally of his obligations to his master, The Lordrecompense it a thousandfold into his bosom,but this is doubtful. At the Victorian Exhibition was shown a por-trait by J. Phillips, R.A., of the great Arnold ofRugby, which was lent by Mrs. Frances Arnold. Knox died in 1572, and Bezas Icones, pub-lished at Geneva in 1580, contains an unsatisfac-tory portrait of him inscribed Joannes Cnoxus.David Laing found an entry in the ScottishRoyal Treasurers accounts, June, 1581, whichthrows some light upon the compilation of Bezasbook: Itim, To Adriane Vaensoun, Flemishpainter for twa picturis painted be him, and send toTheodorus Besa conforme to ane precept 10s.(14s. 2d. sterling). If pictures were sent out from Scotland to Bezain 1581, one of Knox might have been forwardedto him at an earlier period, but this is scarcelyprobable, as the authenticity of the portrait wasevidently doubted. Goulart, who published a French translationof the Icones in the year after Bezas workappeared, suppressed the original portrait andreplaced it by a quite different one, which ap-parently really
