auasha, whom the Greeks called Maxyes. 1 Herodotus seems to have been ignorant of the real name of thefounder of Gyrene, which has been preserved for us by Pindar, byGallimachus, by the spurious Heraclides of Pontus, and by the chronologistsof the Ghristian epoch. Herodotus says that Battos signifies Mng inthe language of Libya. ^ The description given by Herodotus of these Libyan tribes agreeswith the slight amount of information furnished by the Egyptianmonuments for the thirteenth century B.C. 440 THE MEDES AND THE SECOND CHALDJ3AN EMPIRE One of the revolutions so frequent among the desert tribeshad compelled the latter to remove from their home nearthe Nile valley, to a district far to the west, on the banksof the river Triton. There they had settled down in apermanent fashion, dwelling in houses of stone, and givingthemselves up to the cultivation of the soil.
