This the girl quickly discovered, and madecomplaint to Allen, or some of the other emigrants who hadtaken an interest in her case. It required only a statementof her grievances to secure their correction. A party wasquickly formed; the booth was visited and its proprietorcompelled to make ample restitution to the widow of all,and perhaps more than he had extorted from her—for theemigrants were not disposed to make nice calculations inadjusting matters of this kind—and then he was told togather up what he had left and make off with it, which hewas only too glad to do. Allen subsequently found several traders of a similar kinddoing business along the trail between Fort Boise and theDalles. How many of them made a final profit by theirextortions none can now know.
