In the old town clerks book of MountPleasant, about 1801 and later, occurs several timesthe name of George Terry, as overseer of the road,and as furnishing days works on the road. Such an origin seems muchmore probable than that facetiously given by .Air.Irving or that more seriously offered in Boltons his-tory of the county.

The situation of Tarrytown, on the east side of theHudson, and at the point of its greatest width, known 1 Kniiii HiiiIboii Blrw Uliutrated. Cojiyriglii by I). Appletou A Co. as Tappau Zee or Sea, combines in itself every thingto render it one of the most beautiful localities on thecontinent, or indeed in the world. The shore is hereso indented as to form a sort of cove or bay. Nearthe centre of the cove is a ;>oint, project-ing westward toward the river channel,and commonly spoken of as Point Dock.South of this point the cove penetratesstill farther eastward into the land, which,around its shores, rises quite abruptly toan elevation of probably from seventy-riveto eighty feet above the river-level to asecond plateau, and then still higher tothe old Albany Post road, now locallyknown as Broadway.
