It is stated that 143 guns posted alongStafford Heights were engaged in shelling the town and heightsbeyond. The reality of what was to take place, however, could not beconceived, although the appearance of long trains of ambulances amistretcher-bearers bringing up the rear of the troops and passing alongto convenient locations for ready service was sufficiently convincingthat a fearful slaughter was being provided for.
