fence ofFort Brown, Texas. In September of same year was brevettedLieutenant-Colonel for gallant conduct in battle of Monterey,where he received seven wounds. In 1847, was brevetted Colonel for meritorious services atBuena Aista. In 1853. was appointed Inspector-General ofUnited States Army with rank of Colonel. In May, 1861, wascommissioned Brigadier-General and given command of Depart-ment of Washington. On )Mav loth. commanded a division in attack on Norfolk, and,after the capture of the place, was assigned to command of Suf-folk. \irginia. After the second battle of Bull Run, was appointed on a boardof inquiry at Washington, but. becoming impatient for activedutv, was assigned to the command of Twelfth Corps (of whichthe 124th formed a part), assuming the duties of command onSeptember 15th, 1863; was wounded on morning of the 17th, atAntietam, and died at i P. M. of same day. The body was car-ried that afternoon to Monocacy Junction in one of the ambu-lances of the T24th Regiment.

We were then ordered to fall back to the edgeof the cornfield and take position behind the fence, which was done ingood order. We were again ordered to advance, when the right, advancingabout 100 yards, received a raking fire from the enemy in the West Woods,which was responded to by repeated volleys from our men, l)ut the firefrom our left and the battery of the enemy on the right conipL-lled us toagain fall liack to the stacks. A battery now planted on tlie hill betweenthe East Woods and the cornfield and opposite the stacks; tins portionof our right was ordered to its support; the balance of the regimentfollowed up the advance through the cornfield, making many successfulcharges upon the enemy, until they were also ordered back to the supportof the batteries at the west side and near the southwest corner of the EastWoods.
