oor forming the bathtub, thefaucets being of swans heads and gilded. The question of color should never be neglected,even when a bathroom and its appointments aresimple. A moderate-sized bathroom in a modest cityhouse has been transformed in this way : The flooris of white tiles, the bathtubs and basin are of whiteporcelain, a varnished paper showing pink roses andleaves covers the walls and the ceiling. The wall-space is broken by a mirror running from the floorto the same height as the top of the window. Thewindow itself is of a leaded glass of pinkish tone,the curtains are soft green China silk, taking upthe color of the leaves on the rose vines. Chinasilks, it must be remembered, are easily laundered.All the pipes in this instance have been gilded. Another bathroom, overlooking the trees of thePark, is entirely constructed of green and whitemarbles of charming tones. Evergreens fill the out-side window-boxes in winter. In the spring theseboxes are filled with flowers in bloom. 130

In some apartments, where the bathroom istiny, this has been done. The floor and dado wereof the usual white tiles. The tub itself was porce-lain lined. The pipes were nickel plated, exposedaccording to sanitary laws. The panes were ofplain glass. The wise owner laid a plain green rugon the floor, and covered the walls with a varnishedwall-paper showing a yellow iris with green leaves,ducks and swans paddling in the water surroundingthe blossoms. For the plain glass window she sub-stituted a leaded yellow crackle glass costing tendollars. She made her curtains of green silkoline,cut with two straight pieces felled and hangingstraight on either side, with a ruffle across the topto break the awkward space.
