RUISDAEL-POUSSIN velopes of atmosphere. The method, in fact, is a sculp-tors rather than a painters. This is the first point to notice; and the second is theinfluence of Raphael. The latter can be traced in theserene composure of the whole composition, obtained bythe perfect balance of the full and empty spaces, andby the harmonious grace of the lines that oppose andrepeat one another with studied calculation, as well asby the grace of gesture and suave refinement of expres-sion that characterize the figures. Both these influencescombined to make the rendering of the subject an idealone; and, except in the superior tact of taste displayedby Poussin, do not distinguish his pictures radicallyfrom those of the many other followers of Raphael andthe antique.
