This file comes from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) or Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). These are programs of the National Park Service established for the purpose of documenting historic places. Records consist of measured drawings, archival photographs, and written reports.

  • Significance: Stewart house was an example of residential architecture whose square form and hip roof have been repeated many times on the townsite largely among structures moved from farmsteads to town. Stewart house built 1909 with help of Jerry Scruggs. Stewart left circa 1914. Goins lived in it until late 1920s. Residents after that included Jerry Scruggs, Dr. Wilson, Elizabeth Alexander, and Adele Griffie who taught piano lessons within. The house is now a ruin, probably due to construction of Robinson house. Stewart house was sited on a high point ridge which runs along the west part of town 7' above grade of new house; appears owner will demolish old house and grade site. The Dr. Stewart House was considered one of the finest homes in Nicodemus, in the 1920s.
