102 HISTORICAL EVENTS OF VIRGINIA 103 Historical Events of Virginia 1492-1605 Prelude By royal authority of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand,on August 3, 1492, at Palos, a small seaport of Spain, three sailingvessels, no larger than the yachts of to-day, started on a voyageof discovery across the Atlantic Ocean. These vessels were theSanta Maria, Pinta, and the Nina, commanded byChristopher Columbus, a bold Italian navigator. The totalnumber of persons on board the three ships was one hundred andtwenty. On October 11, 1492, land was sighted, and on the 12thChristopher Columbus and his men landed at the island of SanSalvador, set up the royal standard of Castile and Leon, andthus took possession of the land for the crown of Spain. Columbus found the island already inhabited by a peacefulrace of brown skin, naked savages, whom he called Indians.He next sailed southward, and discovered the islands of Cubaand Hayti, which were also populated with the brown skinsavages.
