Five separate tissue systems (heart, liver, blood vessels, skin and cancer), each within its own custom-designed chamber, are shown on a single chip (colors denote different tissue types). They can be used for modeling disease and for studying drug effectiveness and toxicity. They also may be useful in better understanding the physiological mechanisms by which drugs work.
