English: Johan 'Mari' Henri ten Kate was born in 1831 in The Hague. He studied art at the Academy of Arts in the Hague, where his brother, nine years his senior, was his professor. At the age of 19, he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until 1871.
In 1852, he became member of the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Arts. Ten Kate traveled to France, England, and Italy and lived for some time in Dutch East Indies. Johan 'Mari' Henri ten Kate died in 1910 at the age of 79 years. His son, Johannes Marinus ten Kate (1859-1896) also became a talented painter.
