dark brownleather, tooled over the whole of the outer surface. It measuresabout 13 inches in height and about 9 inches in width. The frontdesign consists of three horizontal bands of interlacing, with twointermediate strips of what may, perhaps, be described as debasedfret ornament. The other side is made up of twelve squares each,enclosed with interlaced bands, and having closed rings at theangles, somewhat resembHng the design on the Oxford satchel andthe back of the satchel of the Breac 3Ioed6ig. The hinge istooled with a very simple fret pattern.^ The design on the front, somewhat modified, was taken by thelate Dr Abbot for the block used on the front cover of his valuablework, Celtic Ornaments from the Book of Kells. 1 The authorities of the College, through the Librarian, Mr Livingstone, kmdlypermitted the reproduction of a photograph of this satchel. 2 Father OReilly, the Librarian, very kindly permitted the cover to be photo-graphed for this paper.
