English: Map of the Kawishiwi River Basin. This map will serve to identify the lakes lying within both the BWCA and the upper Kawishiwi Basin. This map was made in conjunction with a hydrological study by USGS. The symbols and accompanying numbers refer to that study, representing sampling or measurement sites. Site 19 is Kawishiwi Lake, the designated head of the river.

The Kawishiwi river continues beyond the discharge point shown here. It bifurcates into the North and South Kawishiwi Rivers; the latter picks up the drainage from the Isabella River watershed lying near the southern boundary of the BWCA. The branches rejoin at Farm Lake east of Ely, MN, eventually emptying into Fall Lake at the Winton hydroelectric dam and ultimately reaching Basswood Lake along the Canadian border.
