rd Major Jackson speak warmlyand gratefully of a ministerial friend in that city; andas Mr. Parks was an alumnus of AVest Point, this ismost probable. Although he had applied for and received the sacra-ment of baptism in the Episcopal Church, his mindwas not yet made up on the subject of churches, andhe chose to wait for further opportunities of acquaint-ing himself with the creeds. But having acceptedJesus Christ as his Saviour and Redeemer, he wishedto avow his faith before men, and became a memberof that Holy Catholic Church whose creed is em-braced by all evangelical denominations. Baptismin the Episcopal Church gave him the right to be-come a communicant, and with this privilege he wascontent, and he did not apply for the rite of con-firmation. One of the pleasant experiences of his garrison lifeat Fort Hamilton was the horseback exercise he dailyindulged in; and, mounted on a favorite little horse,• Fancy, he rode all over the country, and along theshores of the beautiful bav.

CHAPTER Y. PROFESSOR IX THE VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE—1851-1861. At the close of his two years terra of service atFort Harailton, Major Jackson was ordered to FortMeade, near Tampa Bay, in Florida, where he re-mained about six months. The warm climate hefound enervating and injurious to his health ; but adelightful change soon came, removing him to thebracing air of the Yalley of Virginia. This greatvalley, which lies between the two ranges of the BlueRidge and Alleghany Mountains, is justly celebratedas the most beautiful, picturesque, and fertile part ofthe State. The county of Rockbridge derives itsname from the Xatural Bridge, where a massive andsohd arch of rock spans a chasm, into whose depths thebeholder looks down with awe. At the bottom of theravine a little stream ripples along, adding a tendergrace and beauty to the surrounding sublimity andgrandeur. Of this famous county, Lexington is the capitaltown.
