. It was a calm, dispas-sionate, lawyer-like argument, keyed to the highintelligence of the audience to which it was ad-dressed, and it exhibited Lincoln as a master ofall the historical and legal data involved in thesubject. No one but a fully equipped lawyerexperienced in the handling of facts, and onetrained to make their legal bearing clear to thelayman by logical analysis, could possibly haveheld his critical hearers as Lincoln held them, andhis triumph was the direct result of three-and-twenty years of service in the courts. After the Cooper Union address, Lincolnmade a short speech-making tour in New Eng-land ; but except for this work and two speechesin Ohio toward the close of the previous year, hewas engaged as usual in his law practice, and1859 was perhaps the busiest of his professionalyears. It was within those twelve months that hetried and won the famous Harrison murder case,and during the sessions of the Supreme Court heappeared in no less than ten appeals. For the 282

Palmer AS CANDIDATE first half of the succeeding year he was ap-parently equally mindful of his law business, andshortly before the Chicago convention at whichhe was nominated he argued one of his best-known cases, popularly termed the sand-barcase, in the United States Circuit Court. This,however, was the last case he tried.1 Two months later the Eighth Circuit was welland ably represented at Chicago by Judge Davis,Leonard Swett, Judge Logan, John M. Palmer,Richard Oglesby, Mr. Herndon, Judge Weldon,and others. These men had gone to the conven-tion determined to procure Lincolns nomination,and they were well qualified for the work at hand. The lawyers of our circuit, wrote LeonardSwett, went there determined to leave no stoneunturned; and really they and some of our Stateofficers and a half-dozen men from various por-tions of the State were the only tireless, sleepless,unwavering, and ever-vigilant friends he had.
