tions were ardent, tender, and sincere,and the brilliant accomplishments which caused hissociety to be courted by the great ones of theworld shed its genial charm over the quiet fire-side at which sat his wife, and in whose lightand warmth the children whose loss bowed himto the grave grew up only to bloom and perish.There have been much greater poets, more self-sacrificing, though perhaps no more sincere loversof their country; but in the intimate relations ofdomestic life, and the discharge of its common,every-day, but sacred obligations, there are few menwho have borne a more unspotted and deservedlyhigh reputation than Thomas Moore. One word as to the music—the airs of themelodies. They were for the most part, it is wellknown, arranged, and the accompaniments generallywritten, by Sir John Stevenson. The changes inthe melody which not unfrequently occur, whetherhurtfully or otherwise individual taste must deter-mine, were, Moore himself emphatically assures us,invariably his own.
