Sure, as Micky Free used to say, Itmakes me mouth wather just to think of it.The appetite you have after being out all dayis simply voracious. Three large soup platesof it, a pint of beer, and a pipe of good tobacco,constitute a royal repast. On one of our explorations we found aplank painted green, which we instantly rec-ognized as part of the Wandering Minstrelwrecked at Midway some four years previous.We also discovered where the crew of theSouth Seamen pitched their tent, the tentpegs being still there. The site of the restaurant was unmistakable; they must have en-joyed turtle, to judge from the hundreds ofthe upper shells we found there. From theiraccount of their experience they had a gay andfestive time, and brought away dried fish andshark tins enough to start them in life again. 16

For three nights we caught sharks, as manyas eighty per night; but when we dumpedtheir bodies overboard, they evidently mis-took us for Japs of bloodthirsty propensitiesand left. On our fourth day, or June 2nd, we got under weigh again andcruised about. We examined the islet, andsteering from there N. E. anchored again. Wefound between two of the islands a fine chan-nel, with fifteen feet of water at low tide, intothe lagoon. This lagoon constitutes a fine har-bor, well sheltered by the reefs from the east-ward ; and from the westward, northward andsouthward by the islets. A small vessel couldheave down and repair here at any time, byhaving an anchor out and warps to the shore.This opening is N. E. by E. % E. by compass,from the islet. Our time now is devoted to photographingand testing the soil of the different islets. Wehave quite a laboratory on board, but on noisland can we locate guano of good quality.Fresh water we could not find, but at depthsof eight feet we struck water of br
