passenger-ships shall be equippedwith wireless apparatus in charge of a com-petent operator. One of the early objections made to thewireless was its apparent lack of secrecy, sinceany other receiving apparatus within rangeof the waves sent forth by the sending sta-tion can receive the signals. It was alsorealized that as soon as any considerablenumber of stations were established about theworld, and began sending messages to and fro,there would be a perfect jumble of waves flyingabout in all directions through the ether, sothat no messages could be sent or received. Marconis answer to these difficulties wasthe tuning apparatus. The electric wavescarrying the messages may be sent out atwidely varying lengths. Marconi found thatit was possible to adjust a receiving stationso that it would receive only waves of acertain length. Thus stations which desiredto communicate could select a certain wave-length, and they could send and receive mes-sages without interfering with others using 222
