But the Landgrave and anumber of his Minnesingers on their return from thechase come upon him and recognizing him endeavorto persuade him to return to the Wartburg with them,but vainly, until one of them, Wolfram von Eschen-bach, tells him that since he has left the Wartburg agreat sadness has come over the niece of the Land-grave, Elizabeth. It is evident that Tannhauser hasbeen in love with her, and that it is because of herbeauty and virtue that he regrets so deeply havingbeen lured into the Venusberg. The Landgrave, feeling sure that Tannhauser willwin the prize at the contest of song soon to be held,offers the hand of his niece to the winner. The sub-ject of the prize singing is love. The Minnesingerssing of the beauty of virtuous love, but Tannhauser,suddenly remembering the seductive and magicalbeauties of the Venusberg, cannot control himself,and bursts out into a reckless hymn in praise of Venus.Horrified at his words, the knights draw their swords

TANNHAUSER. OPERAS 187 and would slay him but that Elizabeth throws herselfbetween him and them. Crushed and penitent, Tann-hduser stands behind her, and the Landgrave, movedby her willingness to sacrifice herself for her sinfullover, announces that he will be allowed to join asecond band of pilgrims who are going to Rome andto plead with the Pope for forgiveness. Elizabeth prayerfully awaits his return ; but, as she iskneeling by the crucifix in front of the Wartburg, thepilgrims pass her by and in the band she does not seeher lover. Slowly and sadly she returns to the castleto die. When the pilgrims voices have died away,and Elizabeth has returned to the castle, leaving onlyWolfram, who is also deeply enamored of her, uponthe scene, Tannhduser appears, weary and dejected.He has sought to obtain forgiveness in vain. ThePope had condemned him forever, proclaiming thatno more than that his staff could put forth leavescould he expect forgiveness. He has come back to re-turn again to the
