Many learned treatiseshave been written upon it, notably by Sefiores Orozeo, Herreraand Gama; in the Anales del Museo Nacional de Mexico,published by the government under the superintendence of thecurator, Seiior G. Mendoza, is a special article on this subject, La Piedra del Sol, by Senor Alfredo Chavero. As I had thepleasure of making Senor Chaveros acquaintance in Mexico,and was told that this, his last treatise on the subject, isconsidered the best authority, I give the reader a short resumeof it. Senor Chavexo tells us that it was made in honour of the sun,in the reign of King Axayacatl in the year 13 acatl, whichcorresponds to 1479 of our era; it was originally placed hori-zontally in the grand temple of )\Iexico, in the part calledQuauhfeilco.
