The bear reached down through thesmoke hole and stole the herring they were drying.Then people said; Who is this thief that is stealingour fish? Because they said that, the grizzly bearkilled all of them. Then the Kagwantan seized theirspears and set out to kill the bears nearby. When theyfound them, the bears were lying in holes they had dugout for themselves. The people said to them, Comeout here. We will fight it out. So the bears came outand the people killed them. They took the skins fromthe heads of the bears and preserved them. That ishow the Kagwantan came to use the grizzly bear crest.
