ty, desolateness. and utter in-accessibility of the tier upon tier ofmountain ranges, culminating on thedistant sky-line, a hundred miles away,either in the snow-white peak of Kinjin-junga, or Mount Everest in the Himalayas,as seen from the neighbourhood of Dar-jeeling at sunrise. If it remains calmafter a clear morning, when the sun hasattained some height, there is commonlydeveloped in the atmosphere a beautifulbluish haze, the origin of which is in-explicable, but the effect is marvellousand indefinable; softening, as it does, theoutlines on the sky-line and the shadows,while leaving the atmosphere brilliantlyclear and forming a mellowing mediumthrough which the harshness of highlycontrasting outlines and colours aresubdued in a wonderful and pleasing way.This is purely an attribute of thatportion of the range between Mont auxSources and Champagne Castle, asseen from Upper Tugela. To a muchlesser degree it sometimes occurs further The mountains rent in twain- SOUth along the range.
