n eggs. Inthe Indian Ocean pearl oysters are obtained by nativedivers. The days catch is tied in sacks, piled on the beach,and, without close inspection, bought by brokers. After theoysters have been allowed to decay the sacks are openedand the contents washed in troughs of water. Natives,sitting naked beside the troughs and under close guard,squeeze the mass through their fingers. The animal matteris thus washed off and the remaining pearls removed andsorted. Those of best quality and largest size are used injewelry, while the very small ones are used by Chinesephysicians, who burn, or calcine, them and prescribe themas a mild alkaline remedy. Jade is a very hard and tough mineral, of somewhatglassy composition and texture, which was formed in theheated interior of the earth. Since prehistoric times it hasbeen much used by man for ornamentation because of itsbeautiful color and its durability. Chrysaberyl is a very rare gem, which, when polished, isthe oriental cats eye.
