isclothing was all of leather. It was made principallyof old boot-legs, closely sewed together with leatherlacing. His shoes had wooden soles and weighed aboutten pounds. He had shelters or caves to which heresorted at various places among the rocks on the lonelyhills. In them he slept on a bed of leaves with a logfor a pillow. He had a regular route between theConnecticut and Hudson rivers, over which hewent about once every three months, stopping ateach shelter several days. W^ien the local peoplesaw his fire burning at night on the hills theywould remark, The Old Leather Man is aroundagain. The rustling of his leather suit was likely to be heardbefore he was seen. He would stop at houses wherehe had been treated kindly, and seat himself on thedoorstep, never uttering a word. If spoken to he wouldlook up and smile. WHien food was given to him heate what he wanted and put the rest in a large leatherpouch that he always carried. In March, 1889, he wasfound dead in one of his shelters.

It is about eightmiles long and three wide, and is twelve miles fromthe Rhode Island mainland. The island was dis-covered in the year 1524 by a French voyager, who 212 New England says, It was well-peopled, for we saw fires all alongthe coast. The Indians called it Manisses. It gets its presentname from Adrian Block, a Dutch navigator, whovisited it in 1614.
