onstitute one-fourth of the entire population of NewEngland. Boston is an important manufacturingcity. It is the greatest American market for leatherand leather goods. As a wool market it is unsurpassedexcept by London, and wool is brought there in immensequantities from all over the world. The older business part of the city is a maze of narrowcrooked streets in which the stranger easily loses hisway. These streets are said to follow the routes of theold lanes and cow paths that were made when the placewas a country \dllage. In the adjacent region are many beautiful suburbantowns. The finest of these is Brookline, which is aparadise of splendid estates. In the early days its 76 New England name was Muddy River, and the Boston merchantspastured their swine and cows there in the summer. The city has suffered from various serious fires.In its first century it had a great fire about once inten years on an average. But its most notable firedisaster occurred in November, 1872. The Boston Public Library started in the early morning by a spark snapped from afurnace in the business section. The horses of the firedepartment were sick with a distemper, which was agreat handicap to the departments efiiciency. Sixty-five acres were burned over, nearly eight hundredbuildings were destroyed, there were thirteen deaths,and the property loss was seventy million dollars. It lies wellback in a bay that is protected from the ocean stormsby two long slender arms of the land, one reachingsouthward and the other northward, with a deepchannel between.
