AVhile only 2,475 persons are put down as farmers(an increase of about 50 per. cent, over any previousCensus) it will be seen that there are over 40,000 fisher-men and others who cultivate land, more or less, inaddition to their usual occupation. The trade figures shew that during the past twentyyears, there has been stea,dy and substantial improvementin the colonys imports and exports; conditions partlydue to better prices for the fishery products, thedevelopment of the mines, forests and farmsteads, andthe enlarged opportunities for labour created for thepeople through the railroad
