Government controlled media blamed all Egypt's economic and social ills on the continued Tahrir Square sit-in "disrupting normal life" "endangering stability" and "stalling Cairo's traffic" even though traffic jams in the downtown area were also a daily occurrence prior to the uprising.

However, in an attempt to try to win back public opinion, some of the revolutionaries now argued that the Square should be opened to traffic while others, including some of the martyr's families, felt strongly that the space shouldn't be surrendered until those who had killed demonstrators during 2011 were brought to justice.

The cardboard coffin in the foreground was one of 42, each representing one of the protesters who had been killed the previous month in Mohammad Mahmoud Street while attempting to protect Tahrir Square from the police forces who wanted to clear it. .

In the end a decision was taken to open the Square to traffic but this didn't prevent security forces storming down Qasr Al Aini street one week later and beating protesters regardless of their age or gender.

In one youtube video that went viral, soldiers in riot gear could be seen beating and stamping on an apparently unconscious woman demonstrator.
