rRailway by an iron construction; on both sides J 4° OLD AND NEW LONDON. (Underground London. of Farringdon Street Bridge they are connectedwith the Farringdon Street level by vertical shafts,which terminate close to their entrances in Farring-don Street; at Shoe Lane they descend by shafts,and are carried beneath that street, and are thereeight feet high and seven feet wide, formed withbrick sides, stone floors, and iron coverings. Theentrances to the subways at Farringdon Street areby large iron gates, eight feet wide, and varying ! the house vaults, are carried up in the party wallsI of the houses, and terminate at the roofs; and thirdly, by openings in the crowns of the arches connecting with the lamp-posts on the public way,j the lower part of each post being perforated to■ afford ventilation. The length of subway on the southern side of the Viaduct, between Farringdon Street and Shoe Lane, is lighted by gratings, filled in with glass lenses, placed at intervals of forty feet,

kings cross underground station in i< from twelve feet to fifteen feet in height; in theirrear are wooden doors, which can be closed asoccasion may require. There are also entrances,closed by iron doors, with open gratings over them,in Shoe Lane ; and at the eastern and western endsof the Viaduct there are openings, very similar incharacter to those ordinarily used over the entrancesto the sewers, but larger, beneath which are flightsof steps for the entry of workmen; means arealso provided by which pipes of large size can belowered into or taken out of the subways.
