erism of the urethra of the male.—The in-strument used for this operation is a cylindrical tube made ofsilver, or of gum elastic; it should be about nine inches longand of a diameter suited to that of the urethra, which of coursevaries in size according to the age of the individual and tocertain morbid conditions of the canal; the extremity whichenters the bladder should be conical in shape, closed at itspoint, but perforated just above the hitter with two or morewell-opened eyes ; a moderate degree of curvature should alsobe given to this part of the catheter, though a perfectly straightinstrument may be passed through a healthy urethra; theother extremity of the tube is open, and generally has a smallring attaclied to each side of it, for the purpose of affordingmeans of confining the instrument in the bladder, if occasionre(piire, (fig. 162.) gum elastic catheter is used, the proper curve and firmnessare given to it, by bending the iron wire inserted in its cavity The following will be found the most convenient method ofintroducing the catheter, in most cases: The patient shouldlie upon his back, or be a little inclined towards the right side,his thighs semi-flexed and separated, and his back slightlyraised in order to relax the muscles which would, otherwise,somewhat constrict the canal; the surgeon places himself onthe left side of the patient, and exposes the head of the peniswith the thumb and fore and middle fingers of the left hand,at the same time making slight compression upon the glanspenis so as to open the extremity of the urethra; he holds theopen end of the catheter, previously warmed and oiled, in hisright hand, between the thumb and the fore and middle fin-gers, the concavity of the instrument looking downwards, andengages its point in the orifice of the canal, the direction ofthe tube corresponding with the
