r and over. We were gathering speed right along. I found riding in alocomotive very different from riding in a parlor car. Thesprings of a locomotive are so much stifFer that, instead ofswaying smoothly, everything was shaking around anddancing violently. A lurch of the engine threw me overtoward the boiler, and I came into contact with somethingso unpleasantly hot that I took particular pains to avoidanother such encounter. We were running through a chasm walled in on both sides,with the city streets crossing overhead, so there was butlittle to see. The fireman was very busy. Every now andthen, he and the engineer would shout something to eachother that sounded like Here! It got on my nerves atfirst, until I found that they were caUing the signal Clear!According to the rules of the road, not only the engineer,but the fireman as well, must watch the signals. After eachsignal the fireman would jump down off the box, open thefurnace door, put in two or three shovelfuls of coal, and then
