he war, while heand his brother were away on military duty, hisfathers house was burned by bushwhackers.Another house was soon built, but in the meantime the family was obliged to live in a small .shed.The parents of the gentleman above mentionedwere Richard and Sarah (Stone) Day, natives ofNorth Carolina. After making their home inIndiana for twelve years, they moved to Post OakTownship, this county, in 1847 Richard Daydeparted this life December 30, 1892, when in hiseighty-second year. His wife, who was born inJune, 1815, is still living on the farm which herhusband entered in 1850. The family lived foryears in a log cabin sixteen feet square, and madethe journey overland to this state in a three-horsewagon. The maternal grandmother is also livingand has passed the one hundredth anniversary ofher birth. Richard Day was formerly a memberof the Society of Friends, but in later years joinedthe Methodist Church, to which his wife also be-longs. After the war he was a stanch Repub-lican.

Day was born in Henderson County,Ind., January 5,. 1842, being one of nine children.Joseph M., a farmer of this county, sened as amember of the Twenty-seventh Missouri Volun-teers, and afterward in the Fortieth Regiment ofthe State Militia. Deborah is the wife of S. H.Taggart, who owns a farm north of Warrensburg.William is deceased, his death having occurredin June, 1876, in California, whither he had gonefor his health; he was also a member of theTwenty-seventh Missouri Infantry. Mary is thewife of James H. King, a farmer of this township.Nancy C, the widow of Alexander Scott, is liv-ing near her fathers home. Daniel is a farmerof Chilhowee Township. Christina S. resideswith her mother; and Serena J. died at the age ofthree years. Until entering the army Philip S. Da)- lived onhis fathers farm. He enlisted, August 10, 1862,in the Seventieth Regiment of Missouri EnrolledMilitia, and at the end of a few months servicethe company disband
