| Описание | A portrait of Stephen Dodson Ramseur. Was presented to the North Carolina Hall of History on June 7, 1916. According to The Wilmington Dispatch (Wilmington, North Carolina), 08 June 1916, Thursday, Page 2, "The portrait of General Stephen D. Ramseur, dashing soldier who lost his life in the fall of 1864, was presented to the hall of history yesterday. Chief Justice Walter Clark making the presentation speech and Col. J. Bryan Grimes the acceptance for the historical commission. Miss Mary-Dodson Ramseur, daughter of General Ramseur, was here from Lincoln and attended the ceremonies. The supreme court room was filled when Chfef Justice Clark was presented by Colonel Fred A. Olds, the director of the hall of history and master of the presentation exercises. Judge Clark's presentation was brief, history of the splendid soldier and gentleman and Colonel Bryan Grimes's speech a splendid tribute to the courage and nobility of the young officer. Miss Ramseur never saw her father. He was killed on the date of the telegram announcing her birth. Whether her birthday was the date of his death is not certain. General Bryan Grimes succeeded General Ramseur and it is related of the two that when General Ramseur asked General Grimes to congratulate him on the birth of a fine son, General Grimes replied that the fine son was a daughter because no sender of a telegram ever announced the birth of a son without making it unequivocal that a "son" rather than a "baby" was born. The picture has been swung on the walls of the hall of history and hangs among the young soldiers who gave their lives to the Confederate cause." |
