Her first actual test experiments weregiven a few weeks later at Mr. and Mrs. Labouchereshouse in Old Palace Yard, Mr, and Mrs. Laboucherehaving invited a number of distinguished folk to wit-ness her demonstrations, by natural means, of thephenomena for which supernatural claims were thenbeing made. Miss Bentley completely knocked thebottom out of the supernatural theory, and, in doingso, was of great service to the cause of common sense. Miss Bentley is young ; she is in her twenty-secondyear, and at her age very few, if any. succeed in get-ting themselves so widely knowTi as she is. But thenit is not every one who can lift the Czar ; neither is itevery one who can have the opportunity of makingthe attempt. DURING the last month a number of articlesdealing with psychological and occult phenom-ena have appeared in the magazines: What Psychical Research has Accomplished. An extended account of the organization, purposeand character of the Society for Psychical Research is given by Professor William James,of Harvard University, in the Forum. This Society was founded in Febru-ary, 1882, and the purpose of its or-ganization was, first, to carry on. systematic experimentations withhypnotic subjects, mediums, clairvoy-ants and others ; and secondly, tocollect evidence concerning appari-tions, haunted houses, and similarphenomena which are incidently re-ported, but which from their fugitivecharacter admit of no deliberate con-trol.
