A car-riage that was used by the Emperor Na-poleon during part of the Russian cam-paign is preserved in a London museumand is a model of convenience, comfortand strength. The French Academy ofArts encouraged the best kind of work inthe carriage-building trade, and the ve-hicles built would have compared favor-ably with the work of to-day. When attempts were first made to applysteam to the propulsion of vehicles oncommon roads the carriages used for thepurpose were models of strength andlightness. The carriage or its propellingmechanism was in no way responsible forthe failure of the first automobiles. The first passenger cars used uponAmerican railways were road-carriagebodies placed upon frames carried byflanged wheels.
