The first act had not progressedvery far when I heard cheering-. Iknew what that meant and quicklyj gave the sign to the members of myi orchestra, to play flail to the Chief.i Of course there was a lot of excite-I ment, and men and women stood up! and cheered the President. As Lincoln climbed the stairs to thefirst balcony the enthusiasm increased,and as he walked down the narrowaisle leading to his box the uproar wasdeafening. As he reached the end ofthe aisle he stopped and, placing hisright hand over his heart, leanedagainst a white column and bowed! twice to the audience. He disappearedthrough the curtained entrance andtook a seat a moment later in the ex-treme left hand corner of the box. ThePresident was almost hidden from theaudience by a curtain and finally thecheering stopped and the play, whichhad been temporarily forgotten, wasresumed
