T.,where he was taken ill, and before hedied was interviewed by a reporter onthe staff of the Brooklyn Eagle. Hestated then that I probably saved the lives of many people in the audienceby appearing when I did and askinghim to move away from the governor,as his first part In the plot was to turnoff all the lights in front of the stagewhen he heard the pistol shot. When I pulled the cover over thegovernor Spangler did not have timeto get back and turn the lights off be-fore Booths pistol went off. Booth, inhis wild dash to escape, seeing that thelights were still on in the auditorium,must have tried to turn the gas offhimself and in his excitementwrenched the lever from its place, andit struck the wall in falling to thefloor. I still carry a scar on my neck aboutthree inches long as a reminder of myencounter with John Wilkes Booth.._ Withers, win.
